10 Houseplants for Improving Indoor Air Quality

Top 10 Houseplants for Improving Indoor Air Quality

Aside from installing a new furnace and/or air conditioner, what else can you do to improve the air in your home? A cost-effective, beautiful, and easy way to do just that is to introduce plants to your home! Even just one plant can not only liven up any living space, but it will also help filter toxins out of the air in your home you and your family breathe in.

Following is a list of 10 of the top plants to have in your home if you want to naturally improve indoor air quality. Certain plants are better at removing certain toxins from the air, so it’s best to have a variety of plants. Note: some plants are poisonous to pets, so be sure to check www.aspca.org for a list of those that are safe to have around animals.

  1. Peace lilies are great plants for improving indoor air quality; studies have shown that they can improve quality by as much as 60%! This plant can reduce levels of mold spores – they absorb the spores in the air, circulating them to the roots and using them as food. It also absorbs vapors from alcohol and acetone.
  2. Many people know aloe Vera as a soothing skin application – however, the plant also helps to keep homes free of benzene – a toxic chemical that is often found in paint and many chemical cleaners and cleansers. Aloe Vera is easy to grow and simple to maintain, too.
  3. English ivy is a beautiful plant that can absorb formaldehyde in your air, a toxin found in some cleaning products, carpeting treatments and furniture. In addition, it can absorb trace amounts of benzene, which is also found in office equipment.
  4. The spider plant is easy to grow and acts quickly – in just a couple of hours, it can remove up to 90% of the toxins in your home’s air. It will remove mold and other allergens, in addition to formaldehyde and carbon monoxide as well.
  5. The Boston fern is another popular and great plant for homes; acting as humidifiers to help restore air moisture, they can also help eliminate formaldehyde in your indoor air.
  6. Eucalyptus is a plant that has been used for centuries for many types of ailments; the leaves are filled with tannins, which can raise the level of healthy fluids in the air passages of your body. From warding off colds to reducing congestion, the eucalyptus continues to be a household favorite.
  7. The heart leaf philodendron is a climbing vine that is best for pet-free homes. It is an excellent choice for taking formaldehyde out of the air, which can be found in particle board. The philodendron is easy to care for, just make sure you keep yours high enough so that pets and children cannot reach them.
  8. The Chinese evergreen is another one that is easy to care for and can remove toxins that are commonly found in chemical household cleaners. In addition, the plant produces tiny red berries that add a beautiful splash of color to complement any home.
  9. African violets are common in many homes, in part for their benefit of removing toxins and in part because of their beautiful purple color! Studies have shown that gazing at the flowers can increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, which can help people relax.
  10. The chrysanthemum has beautiful flowers that are available in a variety of colors to beautify all decors. They also help to filter out benzene, and do well in direct sunlight. Many people enjoy hanging them near windows in their homes.
