5 Winter Home Energy Conservation and Insulation Tips

5 Winter Home Energy Conservation and Insulation Tips

Here are 5 winter home energy conservation and insulation tips for Palm Springs this winter:

    1. Lower your thermostat. Your first thought is, “Hey, I thought these were tips to keep me warmer while I save energy!” Here’s the idea: While you are away from home for any extended period of time – say, during the day when you’re at work and the kids are at school – turn it down. For every degree you turn that thermostat down, you’ll save 3-5% on your energy bill.

You can go even further with the convenience of an automatic programmable thermostat, too. It can be programmed to turn down the temp automatically at a set time of the day, and will turn it back up at another time, such as an hour before you usually arrive home from work, for example. Using one of these can save you as much as $200 on your energy bills.

  1. Fix the drafts in your home. You might be shocked at how much air slips through doors and windows, and these leaks and drafts can significantly compromise your home’s energy efficiency. Look for leaks around any pipes leading into or out of your home, as well as any leaks around your chimney. Have a professional come in to caulk and install weather-stripping around doors and windows. Your furnace works much harder to maintain the temp in your home when there are leaks and drafts.
  2. Add additional insulation to your home. You’ll want to have between 6-13” of loose fill or 19” of fiberglass insulation in your attic. If yours is lacking, you’ll want to add more to keep your energy usage and your bills down. Many recommend using loose fill insulation, which can easily be added to corners and hard-to-reach places.
  3. Call the EC&S at least once per year for furnace maintenance. Having us come out annually can cut the amount of energy your furnace uses by 10%. We’ll make sure everything is in good, safe working order – we’ll look for any breaks or other issues which may have gone unnoticed and fix them. This is also a great way to help avoid you finding yourself with a broken furnace in the middle of winter.
  4. Have you considered calling a home energy auditor to survey your home? He or she will go through and identify any energy conservation issues that might be present, and will also give you recommendations on how to improve your efficiency. Having an energy audit is a great way to obtain a professional look at how well your home is saving energy (or how it’s not) and to learn how to properly remedy any issues.

EC&S is committed to helping you run your home as energy-efficiently as possible! Count on us for all your heating and cooling needs. Contact us today to schedule an annual maintenance check-up by filling out our brief contact form.
