Heating Energy Myths Debunked

Heating Energy Myths Debunked

  1. Myth: Portable space heaters use up too much energy. Space heaters actually are a great option for homes that have small areas that need to be heated. While the main furnace system will remain the main source of heat, only rooms that are currently occupied can have space heaters running, and you can turn down the thermostat on the main system.
  2. Myth: Having cold feet is a normal part of winter. If you find that your feet are constantly cold during the winter, it may actually be a sign that your home suffers from drafts that you may not even be aware of. Most likely, there are gaps in the weather stripping around doors and windows, and the door thresholds may not be properly fitted, allowing warm air to escape while cold outdoor air sneaks in. You should also make sure floor registers are not blocked and warm air can move freely into rooms through them.
  3. Myth: You’ll save money if you turn the heat off when no one is home. Quite the opposite is true, actually. Your heating system will consume so much energy trying to raise the temperature of your home back up after it’s been off all day that it will end up costing you more than if you would have just lowered the thermostat. Lowering the thermostat instead of shutting it off will save energy, ease the workload of your furnace, and keep your home more comfortable altogether.
  4. Myth: It costs a lot of time and money to winterize a home. The materials needed to seal drafts and keep the cold air out of your home (and keep the warm air in) are very easy to find, are sold together as kits, and normally cost less than $10.00 per kit. You can winterize several windows/doors with one kit, too. Most big box stores and also most hardware stores will have these in stock, and with self-adhesive tapes and pre-cut plastic sheets, it won’t take you long to install them, either.
  5. Myth: Using a fireplace is a great way to save on energy bills. The truth is that fireplaces are designed to heat one small room in a home – not the entire house. In addition, most new fireplaces are designed for nothing more than aesthetic purposes and for ambiance. Your heating mainly will still come from your central system, so you still will want to winterize your home and monitor your thermostat in order to really save money.
