5 Things to Throw Away for Your Health

5 Things to Throw Away for Your Health

  1. Antibacterial Soap: Although it’s pretty common for people to believe they will combat bacteria more effectively by using antibacterial soap, the truth is actually quite the opposite. First of all, antibacterial soap doesn’t get rid of any more bacteria than regular soap does. According to a FDA report in 2014, the active ingredient in antibacterial soaps and cleansers, triclosan, has been shown to alter hormone regulation in animals. If that weren’t bad enough, triclosan may also contribute to antibiotic resistance.
  2. Leftovers in the Fridge: A good rule of thumb for leftovers is to either eat them, freeze them, or throw them away if they haven’t been eaten within three days. Michael P. Doyle, PhD, Director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia says, “Listeria is linked to scary things like meningitis, miscarriages, and even death. It can grow to millions at refrigerator temperatures in under a week.”
  3. Air Fresheners: Elizabethtown indoor air quality is a popular topic when discussing better health. There is a chemical found in many air freshening products called phthalates that some companies are phasing out of their products. Unfortunately, many products still contain these chemicals, which have been found in large doses to cause harm to reproductive systems and human development as well. When these chemicals infiltrate the air in your home, you’ll need air purification systems to balance out the indoor air quality in your Lancaster, PA home, but it most likely will not be enough. It’s much healthier and safer to eliminate the source of foul smells than to use chemical perfumes to disguise them.
  4. Old Plastic Containers: Look through your container collection and see if there are any plastic pieces that are stamped with a “7” or with “pc”. Get rid of them if you find them, because these are the types of containers that might contain BPA. Although manufacturers have taken BPA out of newer containers, older ones probably still contain it. The heat from the dishwasher can make BPA leak out of containers, and the heat from microwaves can, as well. Glass is a much safer alternative.
  5. Worn Out Toothbrushes: It’s no surprise that toothbrushes can collect germs over their lifetimes, just by being used and also by being stored in bathrooms. However, when your toothbrush starts to look frayed, it needs to be replaced. A toothbrush will normally maintain its good shape for about two months, then will start to fray. When bristles are worn and frayed, they won’t do as good of a job at removing harmful plaque, germs and tarter, all of which can negatively affect your health.
